Welcome to the New Year! Like many, I’m ready to make some changes in my life and when I think of one thing I’d like to change, only comes another thing to do, and then another. It’s amazing to me that suddenly my life looks a mess and I need today, 1st January, to make it right. Okay, that’s how I use to think, until I did one thing. I gave myself a break, told myself that life wasn’t that bad and that if I wanted to make true lasting changes, there were other ways to do it.

I haven’t gone in for new years resolutions in a long time. What I have done though is to sit quietly and ask myself’ “what is one thing that I could do which would empower my life?”. This may seem a simple or complex question and because I am asking for “one” thing, it may even seem daunting to get it right – but we don’t have to get it right first time.

This year, a single word came to me; write. When I sat with the word, it wasn’t to write for others or even write profound pieces of content, but to sit and write or journal for myself. Over the years I’ve been a big fan of writing three sides of A4/Legal size paper long hand and seeing what thoughts and feelings come up. This is something which has often opened up my day and week into the direction I didn’t know I needed, but somehow my soul did.

Over to you you … Just One Thing

Take some time to sit quietly, and ask yourself the question “What is one thing that I could do which would empower my life?”. You may want to write down the thoughts and feelings that come to you to find what is the most important. If you have a shopping list of things that come up, go through the list you’ve made and find that one thing which you could do. Still got a whole list of things you could do? Then pick one to do for the next seven days, and see how it goes. You don’t have to stick with the same thing forever, but it’s a start to something more in your life now.

Let me know how you get on!
