One of the most common things I hear before a reading is, “I don’t know what to ask.”

Sometimes people arrive with a page of carefully written questions. Sometimes they’ve spent days thinking about it. Sometimes they sit down, take a breath, and tell me they just want the cards to tell them what to do.

I understand why.

Life can feel messy at times. You might be standing at a crossroads in your career, wondering whether a relationship is right for you, or feeling that something needs to change but not knowing what that change looks like. In those moments, certainty can feel very appealing.

After giving oracle card readings since 2008, I’ve noticed something interesting. The most powerful readings rarely come from questions about prediction. They come from questions that create clarity.

The question you ask has a huge impact on what you take away from a reading, which is why it’s worth giving it a little thought before we begin.

The Questions That Often Lead Nowhere

Many people come to a reading hoping for a yes or no answer.

Will I move house?

Will I get the job?

Will this relationship work out?

Should I do this?

Another common theme is timing.

When will I meet someone?

When will I move?

When will things finally change?

There is nothing wrong with asking these questions. They usually come from a place of uncertainty and a desire to feel more secure about the future. The challenge is that they place all of the power outside of you.

Hidden within these questions is the idea that life is already mapped out and that the cards are there to reveal the plan. In my experience, that isn’t what oracle cards do.

I’ve never seen a reading as a way of predicting a fixed future. I’ve always seen it as a way of understanding the present more clearly.

What Oracle Cards Are Really For

When someone books a reading with me, my goal isn’t to tell them what is going to happen.

My goal is to help them understand where they are, what is influencing their current situation, and what possibilities are available to them.

The cards act as a reflection. They often highlight things you’ve already sensed but haven’t fully acknowledged. They bring awareness to patterns, beliefs, opportunities, and challenges that may be shaping your experience.

A good reading creates clarity.

Once you have clarity, you can make better decisions. You can take action. You can choose a direction that feels right for you.

That is very different from being told what to do.

The Reading That Changed When the Question Changed

A few years ago, someone came to me because they knew they needed a change in their life.

They weren’t happy where they were, but they couldn’t see what came next. Throughout the beginning of the session, they kept looking for the cards to tell them what they should do.

What job should they pursue?

What direction should they take?

What was the right answer?

As we explored the cards together, the focus shifted. Instead of looking for a destination, we started looking at where they were in their life at that moment. We explored what they had learned, what was no longer working, and what possibilities were beginning to emerge.

Something changed.

The pressure disappeared.

They stopped searching for a single answer and started seeing opportunities. By the end of the reading, they hadn’t been handed a step-by-step plan, but they felt excited again. They could see a path forward because they understood themselves more clearly.

That is the kind of transformation I see far more often than dramatic predictions.

Questions That Create Better Readings

The readings that tend to have the greatest impact often begin with questions that invite exploration rather than certainty.

Questions such as:

  • What do I need to understand about this situation?
  • What can I learn from this experience?
  • What am I not seeing clearly right now?
  • What would support me in creating the change I want?
  • What do I need to know about my next step?

These kinds of questions create space for insight. They help us explore what is within your control and where your attention might be most useful.

Most importantly, they leave room for you to remain the author of your own life.

My Favourite Question

If there is one question I wish more people would ask, it is this:

What Can I Do?

It’s a simple question, but it changes the entire tone of a reading.

Instead of waiting for life to happen, you’re looking for ways to participate in creating it. Instead of asking for permission, you’re exploring possibilities. Instead of hoping someone else will provide the answer, you’re asking how you can move yourself forward.

I find that this question consistently leads to practical, empowering guidance because it places the responsibility and the opportunity back where they belong.

With you.

What About Questions About Other People?

This is another area that comes up regularly.

People sometimes want to know what someone else is thinking, feeling, planning, or hiding. They want answers about a partner, an ex-partner, a family member, or a colleague.

While I understand the curiosity, I believe the most useful readings are the ones that focus on you.

Rather than asking what someone else is thinking, we can explore questions such as:

  • What do I need to understand about this relationship?
  • What is this situation teaching me?
  • What would be in my highest interest moving forward?
  • What do I need to know about my role in this situation?

Those questions bring the focus back to the one person whose choices you can influence.

What I Wish Everyone Knew Before Their Reading

Over the years, I’ve discovered that many people arrive carrying fears about what might happen during a reading.

Perhaps they’ve seen television programmes where psychics predict disasters. Perhaps they’ve heard stories that make readings sound mysterious or intimidating.

The reality is much simpler.

There is nothing scary waiting in the cards.

We’re not looking for death, betrayal, bad luck, or hidden secrets. We’re not trying to uncover information about another person that isn’t ours to know.

What we’re doing is exploring possibilities.

We’re looking at your life as it stands today and uncovering what might be available to you from this moment forward. We’re discovering where you are, what is calling for your attention, and what opportunities may be waiting for you.

In many ways, a reading often gives people permission to trust what they already know.

Not because the cards are telling them what to do, but because the cards help them see themselves more clearly.

So What Should You Ask During Your Reading?

Ask questions that help you understand yourself.

Ask questions that help you see your situation from a different perspective.

Ask questions that help you move forward.

The cards won’t live your life for you, and they won’t make your decisions. What they can do is help you uncover new possibilities, recognise what is already true for you, and approach your next step with greater confidence and clarity.

And sometimes, that is exactly what we need.
